This is a photo of Nile's 09 calf and from it we can tell she is a girl and we can see her fluke (tail) colouration, which will be used in the future to identify her if she survives and grows up to be an adult whale living off the east coast of the USA. Notice that her fluke pattern is white and grey, the grey will change to a solid black as she grows up.
If she survives and is re-sighted after her first year, she will be given a name and entered into the humpback whale catalogue.
