grey seal pup on North Rona, scotland.
Pups can swim as soon as they are born (I've seen pups born in pools) and really seem to like speding time in the water.
When they are young they don't have the blubber layer to keep them warm like the adults and weaned pups so they can't spend too long in there, otherwise they'll get hypothermia.
Please note, this photograph was taken from a hide during a routine survey of the breeding colony, please do not approach or disturb breeding seals with pups. Mothers will abandon pups if people come too close, and then the pups will starve to death.
