:star:New science website, re-vamped photography website and Twitter:star:

Hey everyone! While I am managing to get on DA a bit more regularly now, I'm having to focus a lot more attention on my own photography website and a new site about the science I do as part of my job. Public outreach is now so important in science that all researchers are encouraged to make their own websites about their work and blog about what they are doing in the field, lab and what publications they are making. This is taking up a fair amount of my online time, but so far has been very worthwhile and I'm glad that people are getting to read about my adventures with the seals, whales and dolphins that I work with.

We also have a Twitter feed for the science site, which is @KJRScience if you are on that site and would like to follow. (I'm still getting used to twitter as I only joined last weekend. My boss adores it and the lab I work at really likes it too so I gave up resisting and joined, seems weird and complicated to me!)

The science website and blog I now run is here: kellyrobinsonscience.wordpress… and it currently gets updated weekly with what's happening to us in the field with the grey seals we study. There is lots of information about the behvaioural and physiological research we do on the island with the seals and some fun stuff about what we do in our free time!

My photography website has been greatly expanded and improved (IMO!), and I'm slowly populating it with reviews of all the zoos and wildlife tours that I've been on to share my experiences with people. I'm also going to be writing short articles about photography and all the things I've learnt over the years to help improve my shots. So there should be plenty to look out for, I update it twice a month with new material.

Photography website: www.kjrwildlifephotography.com
Latest reviews include:
Cotswold wildlife park: www.kjrwildlifephotography.com…
D810 trainin courses at Nikon School, London: www.kjrwildlifephotography.com…

:star:What else is going on...?:star:

I'm in the field with the seals again! YAY. I'll be here for two months, so should be home by mid december. Lots of time to hang out with the seals and get lots of work done!

:star:First of all, thank you so much for the DD and all the congrats!:star:

I was amazed to take a look at my page and see that I've been awarded my third DD. Thank you so much JenFruzz for chosing my picture of two king vultures at Berlin zoo, I'm glad everyone has been enjoying the shot of these beautiful birds! I've been asked a few times how I achieved the 'pure black backround' in camera and I will write a little guide to how to do it on my website (www.kjrwildlifephotography) soon, its not hard and is very fun to play with. Can get some great results too, from dramatic portraits to just getting rid of ugly zoo backrounds full of fences or concrete.

:star:What else is going on...?:star:

Well I survived living in Belgium and speakign french for a month XD then I took off on a much needed holiday to Ibiza for a couple of weeks with all my family (LOVE this island, so much to explore and do and so beautiful, plus yes the clubs are legendary and incredible!)

Right now I'm getting ready for the annual research trip to a seal breeding colony, will probably be away for two months again like last year. I'm also getting to grips with a new camera body, I was very lucky to be able to upgrade my beloved D200 to a D810 last month and I'm trying to learn how to get the best from it. I've been down to london last weekend for a training day on the camera and feel a lot more capable of using it, hopefully I will be able to translate that into some fantastic pictures!

I'm also trying to really get my website off the ground. It's been around for 3 years now but I've not done much with it, now I want to start writing regular blogs, reviews of zoos or wildlife tours I've been on and articles with tips and tricks I've learnt over the 9 years I've been shooting. I'll post a journal here on DA to keep you all in the loop with what's going on over there, right now I've just uploaded my first review, of Ecoventures, the dolphin tour operator I use to visit the Moray Firth bottlenose dolphins! Check it out and let me know if there is anything wrong, or anything that you'd like to know that isn't in the review, getting the format right is still a work in progress!

Ecoventures review: www.kjrwildlifephotography.com…

OK that's all for now, take care and look out for some new shots from my recent trip to Cotswold Wildlife Park (in the pouring rain!) like this one of their clouded leopard

:star:Hello DA, it's been a while :wave::star:

When did life get so busy?
**pokes all the cobwebs and dust one my account**

I miss this place. I've met so many fantastic people here, so many other incredible photographers and talented artists. I miss seeing all the new work people post, I miss chatting to people via comments... this place was such a big part of my life a few years ago and now its almost been a year since I logged on or posted anything!

I think I would like to change that. So I'm going to try to update regularly, post new things and respond to people's lovely, kind words in a timely manner. Famous last words perhaps... but I have so much that I want to share and I really do miss interacting with other arty people. My life as a scientist means I don't have that many people who are fans of artistic pursuits, and I miss discussing tips and tricks or giving and receiving feedback. That is after all how we all get better!

So I'm going to try and post things here once again. I've put effort into re-vamping my website, so I'm going to put effort in here too =)

Now lets see if I can remember how this all works... everything has (of course) changed so much! XD

:star:To kick things off...:star:

I've posted five shots from my various adventures in the last year while I've been absent from DA. I have SO MANY photos that I could upload... but I will try and be selective. If you are interested in seeing one area more than others please comment below and I'll try and post some more of similar animal species or location! Or if you'd like to see more shots right this minute, head over to my website! www.kjrwildlifephotogra…

:star:What else is going on...?:star:
The first year of my postdoc is almost over, which is absolutely terrifying. Where has the time gone!? Our first year has been an eventfull one, with many ups and downs. We had a very long field season at the end of 2015, we had to stay on the island to complete the research we were doing on the seals until 6 days before Christmas! So that was incredibly exhausting, but we got a lot of work done. Unfortunately it meant I had to cancel my trip to San Fransisco to the big marine mammal conference, which was a shame as I was meant to present my work but oh well, such is life. I'll hopefully get to go to the next one in 2017 in Halifax, Canada instead which would be pretty epic.

At the moment I'm living in Belgium for a month to do some analysis on our seal samples at the University of Liege. I've only been to Belgium once before, and as a tourist. It's very different to live here! I am here to measure the pollutant load our scottish seals have inside them, as marine mammals frequently accumulate very high levels of nasty pollutants like PCBs as they are at the top of the food chain. Its proper analytical chemistry stuff, much different to what I'm used to doing (all gas chromatograohy and mass spectrometry!) and it doesn't help that I'm having to learn it all in half french, hald english!

When I get home I will have a little break with my family (my husband is currently working in south america so I've not seen him for ages, boo!) and then will get stuck back into work getting ready for the fall field season with the seals once again. No rest for the wicked after all =)

Well I started my first official job after my PhD, my postdoc! Its very exciting, although I must say its rather strange not being a student anymore after so long being one! (4 years undergrad and 4 years PhD!). Oh well time to be a grown up I suppose! We are getting all set for another field season on the Isle of May with the seals, I'll be out there for 6 weeks once again studying the little beasties, can't wait!

I'm also heading out to Berlin in October to present some of my research at a conference. I've never been to Berlin before so am very excited about that, and it will be great to see all my fellow wildlife endocrinologist friends once again! I've also been given a place to present my research at the big biennial marine mammal conference in december, which is in San Fransisco this time, but as much as I want to go (I've never been to the west coast of the USA) I think it will clash with the seal research season so I will have to decline =( oh well it's still shaping up to be an eventful end to 2015!

While I was away on honeymoon another of my studies on the grey seals in scotland was published which is such great news. It is here if anyone wants to have a read =)

link.springer.com/article/10.1…

I have been slowly clawing my way through the several thousand shots I took while in South Africa, am very pleased with some of the pics I got. I will post some soon, for tonight I'm uploading some zoo shots from earlier in 2015 and one sneak peak of a Southern Right Whale in South Africa! Enjoy!

(ugh it seems my membership expired while I was away too, I'll have to save up and get another one my page looks awful now! XD)

:star:UPDATE - hopefully the problem detailed below has now been resolved, thanks to everyone for their adivce!:star:

:star:Determined Art Thief, any advice?:star:

So I returned from my wedding and honeymoon (see below!) so happy and relaxed, logged into DA and found a pretty determined sounding art thief commenting on my work saying that they had copied my images and that they can do this as in Iran copyright law doesn't apply. It is true that Iran does not give copyright protection to overseas parties. But that doesn't mean people there have a right to steal people's work and call it their own, its still morally wrong surely!?

I sent them a polite response asking them to...
1. clarify what they are doing with my images, their english isn't too good so I don't know if they are just copying them to enjoy on their computer privately (a bit weird, but not something I have a problem with really) or if they intend on distributing them or something which I obviously WOULD mind.
2. I pointed out that even if in their country there are no laws preventing them from stealing art, its not very nice to do it especially when the artist explicitly says not to do so on all their work.
3. That deviantart, as a site, probably would not support what they are doing even if technically its legal in their country (see this big article they just made! The Art Theft Discussion
4. Iran is actually in the process of joining the various international copyright conventions, so what they are doing will soon infact, be illgeal.

Now the thief did not take too kindly to my repsonse, and immediatly jumped to the 'threats and accusing me of being mean' stage of conversations with these kinds of people. They have even threaten: "i will publish all of images without your permit and as own." Which is surely just being a mean art thief?

Any advice about what to do? If they are just copying the images to look at on their laptop or something I really don't care but if its something more then I want to at least know. I feel like they are refusing to communicate and that my only option is to report them on the DA system =(

The particular photo they commented on is here if you want to have a look: Riverside Tiger

Ugh to come back to this, its just so depressing. I was excited to share some of the beautiful creatures I saw on my honeymoon with you guys but this just makes me feel like why should I, when nasty people just take advantage of you =(

:star:In other news, wedding and honeymoon!:star:

Yes I am now happily married to my best friend and soul mate, we had the best day together and I didn't want it to ever end! We then spent a fantastic two weeks on honeymoon in South Africa, and spent one half on the coast to see marine wildlife and the other half on safari to see the wildlife there. We saw so many incredible things, once I sort through the 2500 photos I took I will post a few here to share with everyone =)
